With stains for wood projects, we use either transparent or a solid paint-like finish. There are varying colors depending on the look you are going for. From a dark wood stain to a very light brown stain. All the way up to fully transparent for just a protective lacquer finish.
On the paint side, high gloss is typically recommended for exterior applications due to its protective nature. There is:

Flat Enamel
For most exterior projects, you have the choice of either oil-based paint or water-based paint. Oil-based adheres better to the wood that it is applied to. Also oil-based in recommended for any type of metal services. But oil paint is hard to clean up and takes longer to dry. Water based latex based paints are more common and easy to clean up. Most all interior paints are water based latex.
